The Entertainer stomps to victory at RSDxMelee

On the 26th of July, Dutch smashers gathered in Roosendaal to attend RSD x Melee, the first collaboration with the Dutch FGC since the SmashNL-DutchNoobz collaboration in 2010. The tournament was part of the RSD series, a series of fighting game tournaments organized by LLL.MBR with the Melee portion ran by ShadowTl, who has been very active as a TO lately. Participants were able to enter Melee singles and teams, as well as Ultra Street Fighter 4(USF4). Though most players stuck to their respective game, a few, like Faab and Fays, dared to take the jump and enter both events.

Notable players in attendance were LLL.Jeapie (Captain Falcon), Amsah (Sheik, Fox), Enig (Fox), Adam (Fox), Faab (Marth, Samus) and Ser (Falco, Marth). The teams portion of the tournament didn't hold any surprises, with the exception of a very close grand finals between favourites Amsah and Faab against Adam and LLL.Jeapie. While they were expected to take the tournament pretty convincingly, given their performance at the last Avalon, Amsah and Faab ended up struggling quite a bit against Adam and Jeapie. Adam, known in the past for his precise Falco and smart Sheik, was unable to resist 20XX and chose to exclusively go Fox this tournament, while Jeapie stuck to his acrobatic Falcon. Although winners finals was a solid 3-1 in favour of Amsah and Faab, it took them two sets in grand finals (2-3 and 3-2 respectively) to claim the title.

Favourites for singles were Amsah and LLL.Jeapie, with Faab and Adam expected to round out the top 4. There is currently a lot of competition between the best Dutch players, which makes it difficult to judge who is the best overall. Amsah recently had a big win at Avalon IV, plowing through many foreign challengers while other Dutchies failed to make top 5. At that event he did however avoid LLL.Jeapie, who knocked him into losers bracket at Republic of Fighters 3, earlier this year. There was some anticipation for their rematch, which ended up surprisingly one-sided. Despite Amsah starting off with a game lead and throwing his Fox into the mix towards the end, winners finals went to LLL.Jeapie with a 3-1 score. Grand finals saw even more dominance from Jeapie, who closed it out with a whopping 3-0. The set featured the commentary debut of Shino and epikfaal, who added some spice to the PROG4MER livestream.

Ser and Enig also did work at this event, with the first taking a game from Adam’s new Fox and the latter surprisingly beating Faab twice, losing to Amsah both times for a third place. Despite the somewhat unexpected losses to Enig, Faab secured 4th place, having beaten Adam in the process. This left Adam and Ser at 5th, the first having lost to Jeapie and Faab and the latter having lost to Adam and Enig. After getting eliminated in the main bracket, the lower half of the tournament was placed in an amateur bracket to compete for first place in a bracket more suited to their skill level, with KR-444 taking home that crown.

The event was a good start of the smash scene working with the RSD series and we’re likely to see more of that collaboration in the future. For more information, you can visit rsd-series.com.

Last weekend Yoshi veteran Mind Trick hosted a local called Schuurfest (Melee singles taken by Amsah) and this weekend you can enter Summer Gamers Beverwijk, which is catered mostly towards casual players and has free entrance. The weekend after players can attend the 5th edition in the Hall of Melee series, hosted by ShadowTl.
