On the 9th of August TiTTin and Skyves hosted an event featuring multiple games in the gym hall of Wijkcentrum Welzijn in Beverwijk. As the event was free to enter, it was relatively casual in nature and drew in a lot of new attendance. Prizes consisted of trophies and goodies mostly put up by sponsors, mainly the Ik Ben Geweldig foundation. The Smash Bros. games featured were Melee, Brawl and Project M, alongside FIFA, Mario Kart 8 and Pokémon X/Y. The Melee and Project M portions of the tournament were run by Marc with the help of ShadowTL, Ace and Joeri.

Because a lot of events were run at the same time with significantly less setups than expected, the singles brackets for Melee and Brawl were single elimination till the top 8. Project M singles was particularly problematic and ended up being single elimination entirely. ShadowTL provided a livestream hosted on the SmashNL twitch channel. Although the view count was low, it offered various new players an opportunity to test the commentary waters.

For Melee, Adam and Marc were the only ones representing the Dutch top 10. They didn’t have much trouble winning teams, with Falcon duo Ace and Rens taking second place. In singles Adam once again went full Fox and Marc decided to join the 20XX extravaganza by going Fox himself, rather than his mains, as it was a low pressure environment for experimentation. It was Adam who convincingly took the Fox dittos between the two in winners finals. In losers finals Marc beat Ace 3-0 with Fox before pulling out a surprise Luigi in grand finals. After several close games, Adam took the event with 3-1. It is of note that it was iStudying who kicked Ace into losers, showing that he can hold his own in several smash games.

The high level Brawl players in attendance were Mr-R, iStudying, Pika4Life, Gymmo, Rahx, RKO, River and Marc, though Marc opted to enter only doubles. Mr-R and iStudying had little trouble winning teams and securing the top two spots in singles, with Pika4Life taking 3rd. Overall it was probably the most stacked at event at SGB.

Project M teams were also taken by Mr-R and iStudying as Lucario and Falco, respectively. They beat Ace’s Wario and Marc’s Sheik and Luigi 2-1 in winners finals. The latter team beat River and Skyves in losers finals and forfeited grand finals due to time. Project M singles was taken by Mr-R after a close Bo3 set with River, which unfortunately was not streamed or recorded. Several people did not play each other due to the single elimination format and, similarly to the PM teams event, Marc had to forfeit after making top 5. Ace (lost to Mr-R) and .FB (lost to River) shared a third place.

Though Summer Gamers Beverwijk was chaotic and a good reminder of the challenges and pitfalls of running various parallel brackets, it was a fun event with a lot of new faces that we hope to see again next year. Those eager to compete in more Dutch events don’t have to wait long. This weekend you can enter the 5th edition of the Hall of Melee series in Tilburg, featuring Melee and PM. Avalon V will close out the summer of smash on the 6th of September.
